Suzuki Shines with Selke Trophy; Caufield Captures Lady Byng

Montreal Canadiens’ Remarkable Achievements

In a remarkable achievement for the Montreal Canadiens, team captain Nick Suzuki has been recognized as the NHL’s best all-around player, clinching the Frank J. Selke Trophy. The league made this announcement on Friday, highlighting Suzuki’s exceptional performance throughout the season.

Accolades for Canadiens Players

Notably, he wasn’t the only Canadiens player to earn accolades this season; Cole Caufield, the standout winger, was awarded the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, which is bestowed upon the player demonstrating exemplary sportsmanship while maintaining a high caliber of play. Both awards are determined by votes from the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

Suzuki’s Historic Achievement

Suzuki’s victory is particularly significant as he garnered an impressive 151 first-place votes from a total of 198 ballots, making him the third player in the history of the Canadiens to receive this honor, joining legends Guy Carbonneau and Bob Gainey. This season, he not only topped the voting charts but also finished as a top-five candidate on 191 ballots, establishing himself firmly as one of the league’s elite two-way forwards.

At 26, Suzuki’s rise to prominence as a standout two-way player has been a journey that has unfolded over several seasons. His efforts first caught widespread attention during the 2023-24 season when he finished 13th in Selke voting and maintained that same position in the following year. His consistent performances were instrumental in leading the Canadiens back to the playoffs for the first time since the 2020-21 season. In the recently concluded campaign, Suzuki recorded 29 goals and 72 assists, surpassing the 100-point threshold for the first time, which also earned him a spot on the Canadian national team at the Olympics, where he contributed to their silver medal finish.

Unexpected Ceremony Moment

As for Caufield, he entered the Canadiens’ locker room on the premise of presenting the Selke Trophy to Suzuki, only to find out that the honor was actually his to claim. The unexpected turn of events unfolded as Suzuki believed he was attending the ceremony to present Caufield with the Lady Byng Trophy, creating a moment of surprise between the two teammates.

Caufield’s Impressive Season

Caufield, 25, made his mark by finishing the season with an impressive 51 goals and 88 points, playing a significant role in the Canadiens’ success while maintaining a disciplined game, racking up only 14 penalty minutes throughout the year. His Lady Byng win adds him to an esteemed list of previous recipients from the Canadiens, which includes Mats Naslund and Toe Blake. The competition for the award was tight, with Caufield receiving 45 first-place votes, edging out veterans like Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings, who ended his career after the playoffs, securing 38 first-place votes, and Jake Sanderson from the Ottawa Senators, who finished third with 28 votes.
