Support Key for Canadiens’ Demidov in Playoffs

Montreal Canadiens vs. Buffalo Sabres Playoff Matchup

In their playoff matchup against the Buffalo Sabres, the Montreal Canadiens enjoyed a bit more room to maneuver on the ice compared to their previous series against the Tampa Bay Lightning. This change was evident during Wednesday night’s game, where Ivan Demidov made a notable impact by showcasing his offensive abilities at even strength. However, the rookie’s efforts went unrewarded due to a lack of effective finishers around him.

Player Performance Analysis

While Jake Evans proved to be a valuable player, his role as a second-line center might not be fitting, especially considering his performance in this context. Despite winning 69.2% of his faceoffs (nine out of thirteen), Evans lacks the necessary scoring touch to effectively partner with Demidov.

Although the top two lines failed to score in last night’s matchup, they displayed a more suitable style of play for this series compared to what was seen in Tampa. It would be unwise to remove Juraj Slafkovsky from the top line at this juncture; alongside Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki, the trio managed to generate nine shots on goal during the game.

Strategic Adjustments

A possible strategy could involve reintroducing Oliver Kapanen into the lineup to play alongside Demidov and Alex Newhook. While Kapanen did not make a significant impact in his prior five appearances against Tampa, his skills could be better leveraged against a faster-paced team like Buffalo. Notably, Kapanen scored 22 goals during the regular season, with two of those against the Sabres.

Integrating Kapanen would necessitate a roster adjustment, potentially leading to the scratching of another player, but given Demidov’s current form, it seems prudent to align him with the players who have historically supported his scoring in the regular season. Joe Veleno stood out with a solid performance during the playoffs thus far, contributing five hits; nonetheless, igniting the second line is crucial in a series where offensive output is key.
