The Phoenix Suns Coaching Search
The Phoenix Suns are reportedly down to two candidates in their search for a new head coach, with Johnnie Bryant and Jordan Ott, both associated with the Cleveland Cavaliers, standing out as the top contenders. According to sources close to the situation, the team’s owner Mat Ishbia, alongside CEO Josh Bartelstein and general manager Brian Gregory, is set to conduct interviews with both Bryant and Ott in Michigan later this week.
Background of the Search
The coaching hunt commenced after the Suns let go of Mike Budenholzer on April 14, followed by the appointment of Gregory as general manager on May 1. The Suns undertook a thorough selection process, initially interviewing over 15 candidates before narrowing the field to eight for second-round discussions. Five individuals, including Bryant, Ott, Miami’s Chris Quinn, Oklahoma City’s Dave Bliss, and current Suns assistant David Fizdale, advanced to meet with Suns executives in person last week. Interestingly, star player Devin Booker has been a part of the search over the past week to 10 days.
Coaching Experience and Achievements
Bryant and Ott were both part of the Cleveland Cavaliers coaching staff this past season, a team that boasted the best record in the Eastern Conference with 64 victories. They joined the Cavaliers last summer as part of Kenny Atkinson’s staff and have distinguished themselves through their commitment to player development and a robust, tough-minded approach. The Cavaliers excelled in both offensive and defensive metrics this season, ranking first in offensive efficiency and eighth in defensive efficiency according to ESPN Research.
Current Situation and Candidate Backgrounds
For the past few weeks, the Suns have been the only NBA team seeking a head coach, which has allowed them to proceed methodically in their selection process. Following a disappointing 36-46 season, the franchise is now looking for its fourth head coach in as many years.
In terms of background, both candidates bring a wealth of experience to the table. Ott has previously been with organizations such as the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, and Los Angeles Lakers, while Bryant has served as an assistant for the Utah Jazz and the New York Knicks. Notably, Bryant played college basketball at the University of Utah from 2005 to 2008, and prior to his coaching career, Ott worked as a video coordinator for the Michigan State men’s basketball team under renowned coach Tom Izzo from 2008 to 2013.
