Suhanitski Claims Section 1 Singles Title; Fink and Xue Capture Doubles Championship

High School Tennis Achievements

In the realm of high school tennis, Alex Suhanitski has made his mark, recently securing his first singles title at the much-anticipated Section 1 boys tennis tournament. The junior tennis prodigy, who has dominated the court for years, now stands proudly at the forefront with aspirations that continue to soar.

Coach’s Skepticism

However, amidst his successes, his coach from New Rochelle, Jenn Rock, expressed skepticism regarding some of his more ambitious dreams, specifically his hope of joining the NBA without even playing organized basketball.

“I’m not so sure about that; I don’t know if he’s that good,”

she remarked playfully, while also encouraging his more realistic goal of competing at the U.S. Open.

Path to Triumph

Suhanitski’s path to triumph became clearer when he overcame second-seeded Sam Saeed from Scarsdale in a decisive match where he displayed remarkable skill and strategy, winning 6-1, 6-1.

“This victory is incredibly rewarding for me,”

Suhanitski shared, reflecting on past competitions where he had placed fourth and third in previous years, respectively.

Now, he prepares to step into the state tournament set for June 6-8 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Queens. There, he will compete alongside the top players from Section 1, including the runners-up from the singles events and the leading doubles teams.

Doubles Championship

On another exciting note, the Horace Greeley duo of Adam Fink and Henry Xue also made waves at the Section 1 tournament by clinching the doubles championship. Just weeks after forming their partnership, they triumphed over the top two seeds, showing great synergy on the court.

Fink, a senior with past final appearances, joined forces with sophomore Xue, leading to a powerful combination of complementary skills.

“We play well together,”

said Fink, acknowledging their shared intensity and strategic approaches. Their journey culminated in a victory against Briarcliff’s top-seeded pair, securing their place in the upcoming state tournament.

Looking Ahead

Reflecting on the pressure of finals and the anticipation prior to their match, Xue expressed his excitement upon winning:

“It feels amazing to win this.”

Their successful campaign will now lead them back to team competition next week at Harrison High School. As the stakes rise, both Suhanitski and the Greeley duo are brimming with confidence after overcoming the intense challenges presented by one of the toughest sections.
