Steve Ballmer’s Confidence Amid NBA Investigation
Steve Ballmer, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, is showing no signs of anxiety regarding the NBA’s ongoing probe into alleged improper benefits given to basketball star Kawhi Leonard during his recent free agency period. In remarks made during the Sports Business Journal’s Drive event on Tuesday, Ballmer expressed his openness to the investigation, asserting that it will clarify the facts surrounding the situation.
“This too shall pass,”
he noted when responding to questions about the inquiry.
Allegations and Concerns
The investigation comes in light of reports suggesting that Aspiration, a company in which Ballmer has invested, provided Leonard with a substantial payment of $28 million for jobs that reportedly required no actual work. This arrangement raises concerns about potential circumvention of the NBA’s salary cap regulations. Notably, despite facing financial difficulties, Aspiration prioritized payments to Leonard, including a $1.75 million disbursement made shortly after a significant investment by Clippers co-owner Dennis Wong.
These allegations were highlighted by journalist Pablo Torre, who connected various dots but did not find direct evidence implicating Ballmer or the Clippers in any wrongdoing. In response, Ballmer and the Clippers have categorically denied any illicit behavior, claiming that Ballmer was misled by Aspiration and that there was no oversight on the endorsement agreement Leonard had with the firm.
Looking Ahead
Further emphasizing his confidence, Ballmer stated he believes the investigation will conclude that the Clippers adhered to all league regulations. The NBA previously examined Leonard’s free agency dealings back in 2019, when it was rumored that his uncle might have solicited improper benefits on Leonard’s behalf; however, that inquiry did not uncover sufficient evidence to warrant any consequences. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has also indicated that any action against Ballmer or the Clippers would require compelling evidence from the investigation. Ballmer’s recent statements reflect his optimism that the league will ultimately vindicate the Clippers in this matter.
