Stephen A. Smith’s Role at ESPN
Stephen A. Smith observes the field prior to the clash between the Detroit Lions and the Baltimore Ravens on September 22, 2025, in Baltimore. Known for his high-energy commentary, Smith has established himself as a household name at ESPN, serving as the host of the popular talk show “First Take” and juggling two radio programs on SiriusXM, alongside running his own production firm.
Changes in NBA Countdown
Since 2021, Smith had also played a significant role as an analyst on the network’s pre-game and halftime coverage of the NBA through the show “NBA Countdown”. However, ESPN’s recent announcement unveiled a reshuffle in the show’s lineup, introducing a fresh team comprising Malika Andrews as host, with contributors such as Brian Windhorst, Kendrick Perkins, and Michael Malone, along with frequent input from Shams Charania.
Smith’s Decision to Step Back
Responding to speculation regarding a potential demotion from “NBA Countdown”, Smith clarified in a recent episode of “The Stephen A. Smith Show” that he actively chose to step back from the program. This decision coincided with his recent contract renewal with ESPN, estimated at a staggering $100 million over five years. Smith explained,
“I didn’t want to be on the show. I negotiated coming off of it.”
Balancing Commitments
The high-profile commentator revealed that his time was heavily in demand due to various commitments.
“I love doing ‘NBA Countdown,’ but after the broadcast, I have other responsibilities that need my attention such as prepping for ‘First Take’ and pursuing additional projects that I have in the pipeline,”
he elaborated. Smith noted that his departure had already been discussed in reports prior to the current news cycle, with sources indicating that his new contract with ESPN would not include regular appearances on their primary basketball pregame show.
Future Appearances
Despite the changes, he reassured fans and colleagues that he would still be around, making appearances when needed.
“If they need me in L.A. for ‘NBA Countdown,’ I’ll be there. I have days in my contract for it, but I am not committed to being there full-time anymore,”
Smith affirmed.
ESPN has yet to issue a statement regarding Smith’s new role. This update has been brought to you by The Sports Report, your go-to for intriguing sports stories from the L.A. area and beyond.
