Stefanos Tsitsipas Parts Ways with Coach Goran Ivanisevic
Stefanos Tsitsipas has parted ways with Goran Ivanisevic, his coach of just under two months. The former world No. 3 announced this decision via an Instagram post on Wednesday, reflecting on the intensiveness of their brief partnership and expressing gratitude for the experience.
Background on Coaching Appointment
Tsitsipas, currently ranked 29th in the ATP rankings, appointed Ivanisevic in May, hoping to turn around a series of underwhelming performances at major tournaments. Notably, the Greek player, who finished as a finalist at the French Open in 2021 and the Australian Open in 2023, suffered a significant setback at Wimbledon last June.
At Wimbledon, Tsitsipas had to retire during his first-round match against French qualifier Valentin Royer while down 6-3, 6-2 due to a back injury. Following this disappointing outing, Ivanisevic criticized Tsitsipas, claiming he had “never seen a more unprepared player.”
Recent Performance and Farewell Message
The coaching split comes as Tsitsipas has only managed to reach one quarterfinal in his last nine Grand Slam events. In his farewell message, Tsitsipas thanked Ivanisevic for his dedication, clearly stating:
“I hold nothing but respect for Goran, both for his accomplishments in tennis and for his character. I wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
