St. John’s Defeats Providence 85-72 in Big East Quarterfinals with Standout Performances from Ejiofor and Hopkins

St. John’s University Basketball Team Advances in Big East Tournament

In an impressive display of talent and teamwork, the 13th-ranked St. John’s University basketball team commenced their title defense in the Big East Tournament with a decisive 85-72 victory over Providence in the quarterfinals held at Madison Square Garden on Thursday.

Key Performers

Zuby Ejiofor played a pivotal role, contributing 21 points along with 10 rebounds and five assists. Additionally, Bryce Hopkins faced his former team and recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, helping steer the Red Storm’s (26-6) surge towards the semifinals where they will take on either fourth-seeded Seton Hall or fifth-seeded Creighton.

The performance from St. John’s was bolstered by strong contributions off the bench; Oziyah Sellers and Ian Jackson each scored 14 points as the bench outscored Providence’s 30-4. The Red Storm dominated the rebounding battle as well, finishing with a significant 51-30 advantage.

Providence’s Challenges

Providence’s struggles could be compounded by reports circulating that head coach Kim English will be dismissed following this season, which is set to be his third year with the Friars.

Game Highlights

St. John’s established a commanding lead early, scoring the first nine points and never relinquishing control, at one point extending their advantage to 23 points in the first half. Despite the ninth-seeded Friars (15-18) narrowing the gap to 11 in the second half, St. John’s responded decisively, expanding the lead back to 24 points with just over four minutes remaining.

For the Friars, Stefan Vaaks led the scoring in the second half, netting 19 of his overall 23 points, while the Big East’s top scorer this season, Jaylin Sellers, added 21 points. Ryan Mela contributed 16 points in the losing effort.

Notably, this matchup marked the first time Providence and St. John’s had met since their highly contentious game on Valentine’s Day, infamous for its physical altercations, particularly against Hopkins, who transferred to St. John’s after an injury-plagued stint at Providence.

Exciting Moments

Hopkins showcased his skills with an electrifying dunk over 6-foot-10 Oswin Erhunmwunse, maintaining his presence by hanging on the rim, much to the excitement of the crowd. Afterward, he celebrated a three-pointer with an enthusiastic gesture, underscoring his pivotal role in the game.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, St. John’s has previously triumphed against both Seton Hall and Creighton this season, setting the stage for a compelling semifinal matchup.
