Sporting CP President Acknowledges Likely Departure of Viktor Gyökeres
The president of Sporting CP, Frederico Varandas, has acknowledged that the departure of star player Viktor Gyökeres this summer is increasingly likely. In statements made to A Bola, he suggested that only a severely incompetent agent could hinder the forward’s move away from the club.
Financial Expectations and Market Trends
Varandas expressed confidence regarding Sporting’s financial expectations for Gyökeres, referencing transfer fees for players like Matheus Cunha and Martín Zubimendi as a standard that potential suitors Manchester United and Arsenal should meet to secure his services.
Viktor Gyökeres, who netted an impressive 54 goals in his previous season, remains a target for both Premier League giants.
“If you were to ask me right now, I would say there’s a strong chance that Viktor will not be with us next season,”
Varandas remarked. He went on to elaborate on the market trends, noting that Zubimendi, only six months younger than Gyökeres, transferred to Arsenal for a staggering €65 million ($76 million).
Additionally, Varandas pointed out that previous transfers in the Premier League, such as those of Matheus Cunha and Mbeumo, both of whom he believes lack Gyökeres’s caliber, were each acquired for around €75 million. With Gyökeres’s current contract extending until June 2028 and a hefty release clause set at €100 million, the situation remains fluid but promising for the player’s future moves.
