FIFA Men’s Football Rankings Update

In a significant shift in the FIFA men’s football rankings released on Thursday, Spain has reclaimed the number one position, overtaking Argentina and its star player Lionel Messi. This marks Spain’s first return to the top since losing its crown as world champions in June 2014.

Spain’s Rise and Argentina’s Setback

The revival in Spain’s fortunes can be attributed to their impressive start in the 2026 World Cup qualifying phase, where they secured victories against Turkey and Bulgaria, propelling them from second place to the summit. Meanwhile, Argentina’s recent setback during a World Cup qualifier in Ecuador contributed to their drop to third place, allowing France to move up to second.

Other Notable Rankings

As for other rankings, England holds steady at fourth position. Portugal has made progress, rising to fifth after Brazil fell to sixth due to a defeat in their qualification match against Bolivia. Among the African nations, Morocco shines at eleventh, while Japan leads the Asian teams at nineteenth, with both having already secured their spots for the upcoming World Cup.

Co-Hosts and Upcoming Changes

Co-hosts Mexico and the United States dropped to fourteenth and sixteenth, respectively, while Canada’s ranking improved, climbing two spots to twenty-sixth. The rankings will undergo another update in November, a crucial month as they will ultimately influence the seedings for the 48-team World Cup tournament draw scheduled for December 5 in Washington, D.C.

This draw will include 42 confirmed participants along with six placeholders for teams from lower seeded pots, potentially including a notable contender, Italy.

The upcoming matches for playoffs in Europe and intercontinental teams are set for March, adding to the anticipation for the tournament.
