Spain and Belgium Secure World Cup Berths as European Qualifying Concludes

2026 World Cup Qualifying Rounds Conclude

The qualifying rounds for the 2026 World Cup in Europe concluded on Tuesday, with several nations clinching their spots for the tournament. Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Scotland, and Austria are among the teams that secured automatic qualification, solidifying their place in football’s premier global event.

Spain’s Dramatic Qualification

Spain, despite a dramatic 2-2 draw against Turkey in their home match, finished as the top team in Group E. This result allowed Spain to match Italy’s impressive record of 31 consecutive unbeaten matches in competitive fixtures, a streak that was maintained by the Italians from 2018 to 2021.

In the match held in Seville, Spain initially exerted their dominance, taking the lead when Dani Olmo netted his 12th goal for the national team. However, Turkey quickly equalized with a strike from Deniz Gul, marking the first time Spain conceded in this qualifying campaign. The second half saw Turkey take control, ultimately going ahead 2-1 thanks to Salih Özcan’s goal. Just as it appeared Spain might face their first loss, Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up to level the score. Despite Turkey’s efforts to change their qualification fate, they now must await the play-offs after the draw ended their hopes of surpassing Spain.

Scotland’s Historic Return

Elsewhere in Group C, Scotland achieved a remarkable 4-2 victory over a 10-man Denmark, fueled by an incredible bicycle kick goal from Scott McTominay just three minutes in. Following a red card for Denmark, Scotland sealed their fate with two additional goals during the closing moments of the match at Hampden Park. This victory marks Scotland’s return to the World Cup stage for the first time since 1998.

Other Notable Qualifiers

Austria managed to secure their place in Group H with a crucial 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Belgium delivered a staggering performance by thrashing Liechtenstein 7-0. Switzerland also qualified following a draw of 1-1 at Kosovo, completing the list of direct qualifiers.

Looking Ahead to the 2026 World Cup

For the 2026 World Cup, which is set to take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19, the top teams from each group will automatically qualify. Meanwhile, the runners-up will have the opportunity to compete for the remaining spots through play-offs alongside the top four qualifying teams from the 2024-25 Nations League who did not finish in the top two of their groups. The play-off matches are scheduled for March 26 and March 31, 2026.
