Historic Signing in the NWSL
In a historic move for the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), the Washington Spirit has secured forward Sofia Cantore from Juventus, making her the first Italian international to join the league. Cantore’s transfer will take effect once the NWSL transfer window opens on July 1, and she has committed to playing for the Spirit through the end of the 2027 season, with an option for an additional year in 2028.
“Joining this prestigious club is a moment of great pride for me, and I am thankful for the confidence they’ve shown in my skills,” Cantore remarked. “I am looking forward to starting this new phase of my career as the first Italian player in the NWSL and to working daily with coach Adrián González and my teammates.”
Career Highlights
At just 25, Cantore has made her mark on the Italian national team, earning five goals in 37 appearances and being recently named to the provisional roster for the upcoming European Championship. Throughout her career, she has played exclusively in Italy, including stints on loan with Juventus. In the previous season, she was instrumental for Juventus, netting 11 goals—ranking second on her team and tied for fifth in Serie A, helping Juventus to clinch both the league and cup titles. Notably, she also contributed to Juventus’ Champions League campaign, scoring twice during the group stage.
Impact on the Washington Spirit
Cantore’s addition comes at a pivotal moment for the Washington Spirit, who finished as runners-up in both the regular season and playoffs last year, but are currently navigating a significant transition within their coaching staff. Jonatan Giráldez will soon assume the role of head coach for French champions OL Lyonnes, with González stepping up to take his place after serving as interim coach last season.
As the Spirit prepares for the upcoming break, they find themselves in fourth place in the NWSL, though they are grappling with a string of player injuries, including American star Trinity Rodman, who is recovering from a back injury. According to U.S. head coach Emma Hayes, Rodman is expected to resume training with the Spirit by July, adding further anticipation to Cantore’s arrival.
González emphasized Cantore’s significance to the team’s offensive strategy, stating, “Sofia is a crucial signing as we work on enhancing our roster to vie for championships. Her vast experience in Italy and her exceptional attacking skills will bring a valuable asset to the Spirit as we move forward.”
A New Era for Italian Players
The last time an Italian player participated in a U.S. women’s professional league was in 2010, when Patrizia Panico played for Sky Blue FC, which is now known as NJ/NY Gotham FC, in a league that has since folded.
With Cantore’s signing, the Spirit look to strengthen their lineup and aim for success in the upcoming season.
