Sky Sports Partners with Zuffa Boxing
In a significant development for the boxing broadcasting arena, Sky Sports has entered into a multi-year agreement with Zuffa Boxing, marking a new chapter for both entities. This partnership designates Sky as the official broadcaster for all Zuffa Boxing events across the UK and Ireland, promising to be a game-changer in how boxing is showcased on these shores.
Strategic Shift in Broadcasting
As part of this deal, at least five live events will be hosted in the UK, signaling a shift in Sky Sports’ strategic direction following its previous collaboration with Boxxer. This transition comes after a split from Matchroom Boxing in 2021, a partnership that was long-standing and highly publicized. Since that split, Eddie Hearn, Matchroom’s leading figure, has made his move to DAZN, igniting a competitive rivalry with Zuffa Boxing’s President, Dana White, who also heads the UFC.
Ambitions and Statements
White has been forthright in his ambition to expand Zuffa Boxing’s reach, often taking jabs at rivals in the boxing scene. He emphasized the importance of the UK to the boxing world, stating, “The UK has played such a pivotal role throughout the history of boxing. The fans there are some of the most loyal and passionate in the world. When you talk about boxing in that region, Sky Sports has always been the home for legendary boxing fights. There’s no bigger or better platform to showcase the best boxing in the UK. This is a massive milestone for Zuffa Boxing.”
Commitment to Boxing
Sky Sports’ Chief Officer for the UK and Ireland, Jonathan Licht, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting Sky’s long-standing commitment to boxing that spans over 30 years. He stated, “Zuffa Boxing has exciting plans for the sport, and we share that same ambition when it comes to putting on the best fights for our customers. We look forward to a new era where we’ll use our platform to both build stars and showcase elite boxing talent here in the UK and internationally.”
Upcoming Events
The first event on Sky Sports will feature Zuffa Boxing 05 on April 5, which includes a clash between Andres Cortes and Eridson Garcia in Las Vegas, alongside a compelling undercard showcasing former world champion Mark Magsayo against Ireland’s Feargal McCroy. This partnership with Zuffa Boxing signifies Sky Sports’ commitment to delivering top-tier boxing content to audiences eager for thrilling matchups.
