Sinner extends winning streak to 25 matches at Italian Open

Jannik Sinner’s Impressive Winning Streak

In an impressive display of skill, Jannik Sinner has extended his remarkable winning streak to 25 matches by decisively defeating Alexei Popyrin with a score of 6-2, 6-0 in the third round of the Italian Open held in his home city of Rome on Monday. Sinner, who currently ranks at the top of the tennis world ranking, established his dominance early in the match by breaking Popyrin—currently ranked 60th—right in the first game.

Title Contention and Upcoming Matches

With Carlos Alcaraz sidelined due to a wrist injury, Sinner is considered the clear favorite to claim the title at this tournament. His last defeat dates back to February 19, when he lost to Jakub Mensik in the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open. Next up for Sinner is a matchup against fellow Italian player Andrea Pellegrino, who managed to secure his place in the next round by overcoming Frances Tiafoe.

Should Sinner triumph in this tournament, he would join an elite club as one of only two men, alongside Novak Djokovic, to have won at all nine Masters 1000 events. Djokovic notably holds records for winning each event at least twice. Furthermore, Sinner is on a roll with five consecutive Masters event victories and boasts the second-highest number of consecutive wins at this tier with 30, just shy of Djokovic’s record of 31.

Coco Gauff’s Resilience

In women’s action earlier in the day, Coco Gauff displayed her resilience by saving a match point during her second-set comeback against fellow American Iva Jovic. Gauff ultimately clinched the match with scores of 5-7, 7-5, 6-2, allowing her to advance to the quarterfinals. Notably, she had faced a challenging scenario in the previous round, battling back from two breaks down in the third set against Solana Sierra.

Having reached the final of the Italian Open last year, Gauff is currently focused on defending her title as she gears up for the upcoming French Open, which is set to commence on May 24.
