Simona Halep Discusses Coaching Prospects and Life After Competitive Tennis

Simona Halep’s Reflections at the 2025 WTA Finals

At the 2025 WTA Finals, former World No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep shared her perspectives on retirement and future aspirations. Halep, who cut her career short earlier this year in February at the Transylvania Open—her home tournament in Romania—made this decision following a significant loss to Lucia Bronzetti. This announcement took many by surprise, especially as Halep had made her return to the sport in 2024 after her doping suspension was reduced from four years to just nine months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Challenges and Resilience

During her comeback tour, Halep faced noticeable resistance due to recurring fitness setbacks, yet she displayed a resilient spirit. However, her recent defeat appeared to lead her to the conclusion that returning to peak form was unrealistic.

Even in this melancholic chapter of her career, Halep’s presence at the WTA Finals has excited many fans. She had the company of Garbine Muguruza, another former Grand Slam champion and notable figure in women’s tennis, at the event.

Future Aspirations and Coaching

In a candid interview with the Tennis Channel, Halep was probed about the possibility of stepping into a coaching role in the future. While she kept the door open for coaching, she expressed reservations about her current readiness to take on such a demanding position.

“Right now, no, I’m not thinking about it. Probably in the next years. I don’t have energy to do this. This means to travel again; I just like to feel at home more time now,”

she commented.

Halep elaborated on her post-tennis life, highlighting her newfound freedom without the constraints of a rigorous training schedule. She relishes the chance to wake up without obligations but also candidly admitted to missing the thrill of competition.

“The adrenaline I miss, winning matches, playing matches, the pressure that I had during the matches,”

she reflected, emphasizing her appreciation for the support of her team and the constant effort required in the sport.

Admiration for Current Players

Although Halep declined to make predictions for the WTA Finals outcomes, she praised Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek for their remarkable performances, noting their dominance in the current tennis landscape.

“In the last few years, [Aryna] Sabalenka with [Iga] Swiatek, pretty dominant in tennis. They have confidence, extra confidence,”

she said. Halep affirmed that players participating in the finals hold a legitimate chance of winning, as they represent the sport’s finest talents.

Exciting Moments at the WTA Finals

The first four days of the WTA Finals have already delivered numerous thrilling moments, including a stunning upset where Elena Rybakina defeated Swiatek, alongside an unexpected incident involving Madison Keys and Amanda Anisimova, which kept fans buzzing.
