Everett Silvertips Dominate in Memorial Cup Semifinals
In a dominant display during the Memorial Cup semifinals, the Everett Silvertips triumphed over the Chicoutimi Sagueneens with a decisive score of 6-1, securing their place in the championship match against Kitchener. The showdown for the title, scheduled for Sunday night, marks a rematch between the two teams, as Kitchener had previously outperformed Everett with a 6-2 victory earlier in the tournament’s round-robin stage.
Significance of the Matchup
This matchup holds significance for Everett, which aims to make history by becoming only the fourth American team ever to claim the prestigious major junior hockey title. Following in the footsteps of teams like the Portland Winterhawks, who clinched victory in 1983 and 1998, as well as the Spokane Chiefs and the Saginaw Spirit, who won in 1991, 2008, and 2024 respectively, the Silvertips are eager to add their name to the list.
Key Players in the Semifinal
Landon DuPont, who recently celebrated his 17th birthday, played a pivotal role in the game, netting two goals for the Silvertips. He regained his form after sitting out the final round-robin game due to an undisclosed injury. DuPont initially helped his team take the lead with a goal late in the first period, and later extended the advantage during a power play opportunity in the second period.
Supporting DuPont, Carter Bear contributed with one goal and one assist, while teammates Jaxsin Vaughan, Zackary Shantz, and Julius Miettinen also added to the scoreboard. Goaltender Anders Miller had a solid performance, saving 26 shots and assisting on DuPont’s second goal.
Chicoutimi’s Struggles
On the other side, Tomas Lavoie marked Chicoutimi’s lone goal during the match. The Sagueneens struggled with their goaltending, as Lucas Beckman faced 28 shots, saving 22 before being replaced by Raphael Precourt in the third period.
Chicoutimi was also facing challenges off the ice, as they played without key defender Jordan Tourigny, who was suspended by the Canadian Hockey League for a match penalty that occurred in an earlier game against Kitchener. Tourigny, who is set to join Northeastern University, was suspended after a severe incident involving a stomp on an opponent’s skate.
Continuing the Rivalry
This latest matchup continues the narrative of a fierce rivalry, as Everett previously triumphed 5-3 over Chicoutimi in their opening round-robin game.
