Siena Clinches NCAA Tournament Spot
In a thrilling contest at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Championship on Tuesday night, Siena clinched a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010, defeating Merrimack with a score of 64-54 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Standout Performers
Gavin Doty was the standout performer, contributing 23 points, including a crucial 18 scored in the second half. Team members Brendan Coyle and Riley Mulvey complemented his effort with impressive double-doubles; Coyle notched 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Mulvey added 11 points alongside 11 rebounds. Francis Folefac chipped in another 10 points, vital in a game where both teams struggled offensively.

Siena, the third seed, managed to outshoot the top-seeded Merrimack, converting 38% of their attempts compared to Merrimack’s 29%. Each of the Saints’ key players put in significant minutes, with Folefac and Mulvey at the full 40 minutes, while Doty, Coyle, and Justice Shoats played for 38 minutes. Coach Jerry McNamara‘s rotation was limited, as Christian Jones was the only player to come off the bench.
Merrimack’s Efforts
On the opposing side, Merrimack’s Ernest Shelton led his team with 17 points, receiving help from Kevair Kennedy with 15 points and Todd Brogna, who scored 12.
Game Progression
The Saints established a significant early advantage, leading 24-9 within the first 11 minutes. However, Merrimack steadily climbed back, finishing the first half with a strong push that narrowed the margin to 33-30. After halftime, Siena surged again, initiating a 12-0 run to widen their lead to 45-30. Although Merrimack fought back, closing the gap to 51-47 after Kennedy hit two free throws, Doty decisively scored the next six points for Siena, sealing the team’s victory.
A Historic Night
This win coincidentally marks exactly 20 years since McNamara played a pivotal role in Syracuse’s victory against Georgetown in the Big East Conference semifinals, adding a personal layer to a historic night for the Saints and their coach.
