Sharks Secure Kiefer Sherwood with Five-Year Deal Worth $28.75 Million

San Jose Sharks Secure Kiefer Sherwood

In a significant move, the San Jose Sharks have secured forward Kiefer Sherwood with a five-year contract worth $28.75 million, just six weeks after trading for him from the Vancouver Canucks. On January 19, the Sharks acquired the 30-year-old Sherwood, sending a pair of second-round draft picks for 2026 and 2027, along with minor league defenseman Cole Clayton, in return. Their intention was clear: they aimed to finalize a long-term agreement before the looming trade deadline on Friday.

General Manager’s Enthusiasm

General manager Mike Grier expressed enthusiasm about keeping Sherwood in San Jose, highlighting his compatibility with the team’s evolving roster.

“We are very excited to have Kiefer remain in San Jose and be part of the group that we are building,”

Grier commented, noting how Sherwood’s abilities enhance the overall skill set of the team.

Recent Performance and Career Stats

This deal comes right after Sherwood netted his first goal for the Sharks during a power-play opportunity in a recent game against Montreal. Despite initially joining the team while recovering from an injury, Sherwood has managed to accumulate one goal and one assist over his first five games with San Jose. Prior to the trade, he had been a standout player for Vancouver, leading the team with 17 goals in their first 48 matches.

Sharks’ Current Standing

Currently riding a three-game winning streak, the Sharks are just outside the playoff picture with 64 points from 59 games. They are trailing the Edmonton Oilers, who occupy the final wild-card spot with 68 points earned from 62 games, and the Seattle Kraken, who sit third in the Pacific Division with 67 points in 60 games. So far in his NHL career, Sherwood has tallied 61 goals and 62 assists over 314 games, notably scoring 47 of those goals starting from the 2023-24 season.
