Jets Appoint Seth Ryan as Offensive Passing Game Coordinator
The New York Jets have taken a significant step in their offensive strategy by appointing Seth Ryan, the son of former head coach Rex Ryan, as the team’s offensive passing game coordinator. A source familiar with the situation revealed this news to The Associated Press on Saturday, noting that the official announcement from the team is pending.
Background on Seth Ryan
Seth Ryan, 31, has spent the prior five seasons with the Detroit Lions in several coaching capacities, most recently as the assistant tight ends coach during the previous year. His new role will see him collaborate closely with Frank Reich, who was recently appointed as the Jets’ offensive coordinator, having joined the coaching staff under head coach Aaron Glenn.
This hiring continues a family legacy within the Jets organization, as Seth is not only the son of Rex Ryan, who served as head coach from 2009 to 2014, but also the grandson of Buddy Ryan, who coached the team’s defensive line during their only Super Bowl appearance in 1968-1975.
Coaching Journey
Seth honed his skills as a player at Summit High School before competing at Clemson, where he was part of the team that triumphed over Alabama in the College Football Playoff national championship in January 2017. He began his coaching career with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2019 as an offensive quality control coach before moving to the Lions as an assistant wide receivers coach in 2021, during Glenn’s tenure as their defensive coordinator under head coach Dan Campbell.
Coaching Staff Overhaul
This move comes on the heels of a broader coaching staff overhaul aimed at improving the Jets’ performance following a disappointing 3-14 season. Earlier this week, Frank Reich was hired by Glenn to lead the offense, succeeding Tanner Engstrand, who parted ways with the team after just one season. Glenn also appointed Brian Duker as the new defensive coordinator, thus reshaping the Jets’ coaching framework moving forward.
