Sergio Busquets to Retire in 2025, Plans Sabbatical Before Coaching

Sergio Busquets Announces Retirement Plans

Sergio Busquets, the Inter Miami midfielder, has announced that he will step away from professional football at the conclusion of the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) season, with plans to pursue a coaching career afterward. In a heartfelt ceremony held at Chase Stadium, following Miami’s 4-1 victory over the New England Revolution, Busquets addressed reporters, sharing his intentions and reflecting on his lengthy career.

Reflections on His Career

The 35-year-old Spanish international emphasized the importance of taking a break before moving into coaching, citing the exhaustive schedule and the desire to spend quality time with his family as motivating factors for his decision.

“I think in the future, yes [I’d want to be a coach], but for now I’d rather take a sabbatical,”

stated Busquets. He elaborated,

“It’s a long time, with hardly any weekends. Playing for the national team adds another layer of commitment, but I want the chance to enjoy my family, watch football from a different perspective, and travel more.”

Legacy and Achievements

Having debuted with FC Barcelona in 2008, Busquets has experienced nearly two decades of professional soccer, becoming a key figure not only at Barcelona but also for the Spanish national team and, more recently, Inter Miami. He acknowledged that while he possesses the physical capability to continue playing, he believes it is wise to step back at this juncture.

“I like to finish well in places, to end good stories by my own choice. I think that’s how it’s been. I could play on, yes, but there are many more aspects to consider. I’m very happy with my decision and proud of the career I’ve had.”

Impact in MLS

Busquets has already made a mark in MLS history with Inter Miami, contributing to their triumph in the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, while also helping set a league record for points in a single season. As the regular season approaches its conclusion on October 18, 2025, Inter Miami has secured a playoff spot, allowing more opportunities for Busquets to step onto the field before he hangs up his boots for good. Presently, the team sits in a promising third position in the Eastern Conference standings, boasting 59 points from 32 matches.
