Return to the National Team
MORRISTOWN, N.J. – After enduring a challenging recovery from a torn ACL, Sergiño Dest is preparing to make his long-awaited return to the United States men’s national soccer team, marking his first appearance in over a year and a half. Reflecting on a tumultuous period in his career, particularly following his disciplinary issues during a match in Trinidad last November, Dest expresses a newfound maturity.
Learning from Past Mistakes
In that controversial game against Trinidad during the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals, Dest received two yellow cards for dissent in rapid succession, leading to his ejection.
“It was clearly not a good moment for me, and I’ve learned a lot since then,”
Dest acknowledged.
“I now understand the importance of managing my emotions. Losing your temper does not assist the team, and I’m fully focused on ensuring I don’t repeat those mistakes.”
The 24-year-old had to serve a one-match suspension due to that incident, which forced him to miss the semifinal against Jamaica. He returned for the U.S.’s 2-0 victory over Mexico on March 24 but shortly thereafter sustained his ACL injury during a training session with PSV Eindhoven. He recalled the moment of injury vividly, stating,
“I was defending and attempting to block a cross when my foot landed awkwardly, causing immediate pain. Initially, I thought it was manageable, but it became apparent that it was far more severe.”
Recovery Journey
After an extended recovery, which included a delayed return to competitive play, he finally participated in a 90-minute match on May 18 when PSV Eindhoven clinched the Dutch league title, ensuring a successful end to the season.
“It’s been a gradual process to get back to full match fitness,”
Dest noted.
“There were moments on the field where I’d feel I was finding my rhythm again. However, recovering from such a serious injury requires patience, and I’m continuing to build my strength.”
Dest initially expected to take part in the Gold Cup; however, his return to training revealed a significant loss of strength in his right leg, ultimately leading to a decision to withdraw from the tournament.
“I had taken a brief break and underestimated the impact. Upon returning, I discovered I lacked the power I needed to compete safely, which was disappointing for me and the coaching staff.”
Impact on the Team
Having previously played as a crucial starter for the U.S. in all four matches during the 2022 World Cup, Dest is regarded for his attacking prowess, which sets him apart from many American defenders. Coach Mauricio Pochettino commended Dest for his offensive capabilities, suggesting he injects unpredictability into the team’s strategy.
“His ability to advance and take on players brings a valuable dimension to our game,”
Pochettino stated.
Background and Future
Born to a Surinamese-American father and a Dutch mother, Dest developed his skills in the Ajax youth academy before opting to represent the U.S. at the international level, earning his first cap in 2019. He notably became the first American to sign with Barcelona’s senior team in October 2020; however, his time at the club diminished under coach Xavi Hernández, which led to loan spells with AC Milan and, ultimately, PSV Eindhoven, who secured his rights with a four-year contract despite his injury.
In his time away from soccer during recovery, Dest found solace in alternative pursuits, including following Formula 1 racing, which he attended in Zandvoort.
“I focused on enjoying life beyond football, spending time with friends and family, which helped me distance myself from the frustrations of not being able to play,”
he shared.
“It was important for my mental well-being.”
