Senators Defenseman Jake Sanderson Injured After Dangerous Hit by Taylor Hall

Game 3 Setback for the Ottawa Senators

In a tough Game 3 setback against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Ottawa Senators faced the unfortunate loss of defenseman Jake Sanderson due to an illegal head hit. The incident occurred when Carolina’s Taylor Hall delivered a blow that knocked Sanderson’s helmet off, leading to a two-minute penalty for Hall. Despite earlier showcasing his toughness by blocking a shot with his hand, Sanderson only managed to play a couple more shifts before exiting the game while his team was on a power play.

Coaching Concerns

Senators head coach Travis Green expressed his discontent regarding the officiating, questioning the absence of a more severe five-minute major penalty for what he described as a blatant head hit.

“This is a brutal hit by Taylor Hall on Sanderson, which got two minutes for an illegal check to the head. Cut across the front of the body and head was the main point of contact,”

Green remarked, highlighting the severity he believed warranted a harsher penalty.

He further noted the seeming inconsistency in officiating, contrasting the missed review of Hall’s hit with an earlier review on captain Brady Tkachuk for an unclear penalty.

Sanderson’s Impact and Team’s Challenge

Sanderson, a pivotal player for the Senators who earned a gold medal with Team USA at the Olympics, had a standout season, finishing as the team’s highest-scoring defenseman with 54 points. In the playoffs, he has contributed two assists and logged an impressive 43 minutes in the previous double-overtime loss. With their Game 3 defeat locked at 2-1, the Senators now face an uphill battle in the best-of-seven series, trailing 3-0. They will aim to avoid elimination in their next matchup at home on Saturday, April 25.
