NHL Regular Season Update
As the NHL regular season approaches its final stretch, teams across the league are feeling the pressure to perform, particularly those vying for playoff positions. On Wednesday night, the Ottawa Senators will confront the Washington Capitals in a pivotal matchup, marking another critical moment in an already intense season for the Senators.
Senators’ Struggles and Resurgence
General Manager Steve Staios openly acknowledges the team’s struggles earlier in the season, stating that the Senators “pissed away a lot of points early on.” Now, they are in a position where they must mount a resurgence to secure a playoff berth. Their recent performance has improved significantly, boasting an impressive record of 11 wins, 2 losses, and 2 overtime losses since late January. Despite their surge, the Senators have encountered challenges, as the teams above them in the standings have been consistently earning points.
Starting this recent stretch, the Senators found themselves nine points adrift of a playoff spot with seven teams in between them and the wild cards. However, the scenario has changed, and they now sit just five points behind with two games in hand on key competitors, the Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings. Moreover, the Columbus Blue Jackets are also battling, only one point behind the Senators in the race for a wild card.
Capitals’ Playoff Hopes
On the other hand, the Capitals are in a precarious situation themselves, trailing eight points out of the playoff race and needing to surpass four teams, one of which is the Senators. For Washington, this game is crucial; failing to secure a victory would severely diminish their chances of a playoff comeback.
Game Preparation
In preparation for the game, Senators head coach Travis Green has decided to maintain the existing lineup, emphasizing the importance of their own intensity in facing a desperate opponent.
“Our approach isn’t really changing,”
Green commented, acknowledging the urgency of the match.
However, the Senators will have to navigate this game without key defenders Jake Sanderson, who is expected to return to practice soon, and Nick Jensen, who faces a lengthy recovery from a knee injury.
In a notable development for the Capitals, Cole Hutson—brother of Montreal defenseman Lane Hutson—will make his NHL debut. He is set to play alongside Matt Roy on the second power-play unit, as the team believes he is ready for this crucial encounter. Hutson was selected in the 2024 NHL Draft, 36 picks after Carter Yakemchuk, who, despite the injuries plaguing the Senators, remains in the AHL at Belleville.
