Sebastián Fundora Receives WBC’s ‘Aztec Warrior’ Belt in Heartfelt Ceremony in Mexico City

WBC Celebrates Sebastián Fundora

This week, the World Boxing Council (WBC) celebrated Sebastián Fundora’s remarkable achievement in the boxing ring by awarding him the prestigious “Aztec Warrior” belt during an event in Mexico City. The WBC super welterweight champion, alongside his family, including his sisters Gabriela, the reigning undisputed flyweight champion, and Fabiola, as well as his father and trainer, Freddy Fundora, attended the ceremony at a local venue known as Martes de Café.

Fundora’s Journey to the Title

Fundora earned this accolade following his intense fight against Tim Tszyu earlier this year, showcased on the undercard of the Pacquiao vs Barrios event. His gritty performance not only led to a notable victory but also established him as one of the most surprising champions in recent boxing history. Before facing Tszyu, Fundora expressed his eagerness about the upcoming fight in an interview with World Boxing News, emphasizing his readiness to put on an exceptional show.

“I was thrilled about the opportunity. We wanted this match, and now it’s time to put on a display for the fans,” Fundora stated, acknowledging that his opponent might have a newfound respect for him after their face-off. He reflected on the importance of this bout for both of their careers.

A Memorable Award Ceremony

During the award ceremony, WBC Ambassador Josejas was joined by legendary Mexican fighters like Daniel Zaragoza and “Pipino” Cuevas to present Fundora with his commemorative title, recognizing not just his skill, but his tenacity and spirit in the sport.

“It was essential for me to come back to Mexico and celebrate with my family here,” Fundora expressed, visibly emotional during the tribute. He shared a touching moment with WBC leader Mauricio Sulaimán, likening the smile shared between them to that of family members. Fundora was deeply appreciative of this honor, stating, “I’m very grateful to be here.”

The Significance of the Warrior Belt

The WBC’s Warrior belt is not given out lightly; it is awarded to those fighters who exhibit exceptional resolve and heart in their matches, qualities that the WBC has recognized in Fundora, nicknamed “The Towering Inferno” for his formidable presence in the ring. On this occasion, however, he stood humbly among his loved ones, embodying the essence of a true Mexican-American fighting spirit.
