Sebastian Fundora’s Aspirations
Sebastian Fundora expressed his eagerness to face Manny Pacquiao for the WBC super welterweight title if circumstances allow. In a recent interview with World Boxing News, Fundora shared his thoughts ahead of his supporting fight during Pacquiao’s upcoming match against Mario Barrios.
Potential Matchup Excitement
When questioned about the potential matchup with the boxing legend, Fundora was enthusiastic, stating,
“Absolutely, absolutely. Wow, this is a question, and that’s the first time it’s been asked of me. I’d love that fight.”
Historic Implications
If Pacquiao is victorious against Barrios, he would make history as the oldest welterweight champion at 46 years old, setting the stage for an exciting champion vs champion showdown with Fundora. Both fighters are managed by Premier Boxing Champions, meaning a Pay-Per-View event could be seamless to organize.
Fundora’s Optimism
For Pacquiao, a fight against Fundora would mark another significant milestone following his four-year hiatus from the ring. Although there has been no prior discussion of a future bout between the two, Fundora remains optimistic. He clarified,
“No, no, it hasn’t, no, it hasn’t been mentioned yet. Again, we’ve got to see how Pacquiao comes out in this fight. But if he does win, my doors are open.”
Confidence in Pacquiao
Fundora also voiced his confidence in Pacquiao’s abilities, stating,
“I do think he can (beat Barrios). But, will he? We’ll see.”
If Pacquiao secures the super welterweight title, he could break Cornelius Bundrage’s record as the oldest champion in that weight class by five years.
Legacy in the Making
This fight would be an exceptional opportunity for the Filipino fighter to further cement his legacy in boxing, having previously won the 154-pound title fifteen years after his first championship victory against Antonio Margarito in 2010. Achieving this feat at nearly 47 years old would certainly add to Pacquiao’s storied career and Hall of Fame credentials.
