NHL Global Series in Helsinki
The NHL Global Series will include an exciting stop in Helsinki next season, with the Carolina Hurricanes being one of the two teams chosen to participate. For Sebastian Aho, the Hurricanes’ alternate captain and a Finnish native, this announcement has sparked a particular thrill. After spending ten seasons in the NHL, Aho has regularly returned to Finland during the offseason but hasn’t played in front of a home crowd since 2016.
Aho’s Excitement
Aho expressed his eagerness, noting, “It’s going to be a little strange because the audience won’t be exclusively made up of Canes or Kraken fans. They will be there to witness high-quality hockey, and I hope they root for the Finns.”
This opportunity is particularly special for Aho, who is already coordinating plans to host a significant number of friends and family at the games.
“We are working on ticket arrangements for those important to me, and thankfully most can make it. It’s something many of my loved ones haven’t had the chance to experience before. Though it might get a bit pricey, I believe it will be worth it.”
Team Announcement
The Hurricanes’ star player learned of this incredible opportunity right before the Olympic break through the team’s general manager, Eric Tulsky.
“Eric came to me in the locker room and shared the news. Within minutes, most of the team knew; we were asked to keep it under wraps until then, but it was just pure excitement,” Aho recalled.
Dining Rivalry
In conversations with his fellow Finnish teammate, Seattle Kraken forward Kaapo Kakko, Aho humorously noted that Kakko intends to make reservations at every desirable restaurant during their visit, creating a playful rivalry over dining spots.
“We better act fast to get into some of the nicest places; I know the Kraken will want to enjoy their time too. But I’m confident we will find some great spots for the team.”
Cultural Immersion
Although Aho was coy about revealing specific plans for the Hurricanes during their stay, he did mention incorporating traditional Finnish elements like sauna experiences, salmon soup, and reindeer into their cultural immersion.
Coaching Perspective
Reflecting on the past, Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour, who participated in a similar trip over 15 years ago, emphasized the value of these experiences beyond the game day.
“This is a chance to create unforgettable memories together. While winning is essential, discovering a new culture and bonding as a team is invaluable,” he stated.
Aho’s Sentimental Journey
Interestingly, this trip holds sentimental value for Aho; he attended a game in Helsinki during his youth, witnessing the Hurricanes play the Minnesota Wild—marking one of his first encounters with the NHL. Names like Jussi Jokinen and Niklas Bäskström were among the Finnish stars he admired back then. Reflecting on that experience, Aho stated,
“At 13, I never imagined I would one day play for the Canes. It’s a bit surreal to have come full circle. I enjoyed that game and hope I will enjoy the experience of playing in my home country just as much now.”
Conclusion
The NHL Global Series is not just a showcase of hockey talent but an opportunity for personal growth and sporting camaraderie that transcends borders, allowing players like Aho to reconnect with their roots and fans.
