In a season filled with both challenges and emotional tributes, Sean Monahan has emerged as the deserving recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded for his unwavering commitment to the sport and for exemplifying resilience and sportsmanship. The announcement came from the NHL on Thursday, highlighting Monahan’s dedication amidst overwhelming personal grief following the tragic loss of his close friend, Johnny Gaudreau.
Monahan’s Journey and Personal Loss
The 30-year-old center, who joined the Columbus Blue Jackets this past summer, shared a significant bond with Gaudreau from their nine years together on the Calgary Flames. Monahan had expressed a desire to carry on his friend’s legacy through his gameplay. However, just weeks before the start of training camp, tragedy struck when Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, were tragically killed in a biking accident in New Jersey.
On-ice Performance and Mentorship
Monahan, who has been in the NHL for 12 seasons, completed a strong campaign with the Blue Jackets, scoring 19 goals and assisting on 38 others in just 54 games. His scoring rate of 1.06 points per game set a new personal best. Despite suffering a wrist injury in January that sidelined him for 28 games, he returned to help guide the team to a respectable finish, where they narrowly missed the playoffs, finishing ninth in the Eastern Conference.
Columbus head coach Dean Evason noted that Monahan’s influence extends beyond his statistical contributions; he has been instrumental in mentoring younger players like Adam Fantilli, Kent Johnson, and Kirill Marchenko, significantly impacting their development. Amidst his on-ice performance, Monahan displayed remarkable composure and grace off the ice, frequently discussing Gaudreau in various cities, demonstrating emotional strength in the face of heartbreak.

Similarly, a heartfelt ceremony in Calgary in December saw Monahan visibly emotional as he paid tribute to Gaudreau, commemorating their shared legacy and the impact Gaudreau had on his life.
