Seamus Casey: A Rising Star for the New Jersey Devils
As the New Jersey Devils prepare for the upcoming 2025-26 season, one player to keep an eye on is Seamus Casey, a promising 21-year-old defenseman. Selected in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft, Casey is focused on securing a permanent position within the team’s roster after a season spent alternating between the NHL and AHL.
Performance Overview
During his time with the Devils last year, Casey featured in 14 games, where he made an impact with four goals and four assists, accumulating a total of eight points. Meanwhile, his tenure with the Utica Comets saw him contribute significantly as well, as he notched three goals and collected 18 points across 30 matches, finishing with a plus-1 rating.
Standing at five-foot-ten, Casey may not possess the size commonly associated with defensemen, but his ability to excel in both defensive and offensive aspects of the game has drawn attention. He showcased his talent during the Prospects Challenge this fall and is eager to build on last season’s achievements. Notably, Casey made his NHL debut in Prague during the preseason for 2024, marking the occasion with his first-ever goal just two games in.
Passion for Offense
In a recent discussion with the Comets before the training camp kicked off, Casey expressed his passion for offense:
“I love to play offense too and help out whenever I can. I love to play with the puck on my stick and in the offensive zone with my teammates. Things went well on the offensive side last year and I’m looking to keep that up, but you have to be a complete player around all sides of the puck.”
Injury Setback and Recovery
Despite starting training camp on a strong note, Casey has encountered a slight injury setback. Head Coach Sheldon Keefe provided an update, noting,
“He tweaked something in that practice Saturday. He’s doing a lot better. I just felt giving him a couple more days would be the smart thing to do. I would expect to see him Friday if he continues on the path that he is here now.”
Though he will miss the upcoming game, Casey remains optimistic about his recovery and is determined to demonstrate his worthiness for a regular role on the Devils’ roster. He commented on his need to enhance his physicality, acknowledging,
“Not being one of the biggest defensemen out there, there’s always room to focus on being more physical. I never want there to be any doubts there. It’s just about being as consistent as I can be in all areas, which comes back to the help of the coaching staff and some of the older guys. Those daily habits on the ice might seem trivial, but you have to be able to do the little things right.”
When he returns to the ice, Casey will have a fresh opportunity to assert why he deserves a place among the Devils and to continue his development as a key player for the future.
