San Jose Sharks forgo captaincy, implement alternate captain rotation

San Jose Sharks Leadership Structure for 2025-26 NHL Season

In an unexpected move, the San Jose Sharks have decided not to appoint a captain for the upcoming 2025-26 NHL season, opting instead for a leadership structure consisting of five alternate captains. Head coach Ryan Warsofsky shared this news on Wednesday, highlighting that forward Tyler Toffoli will assume the “A” for all matches.

Alternate Captains

Additionally, Macklin Celebrini and Barclay Goodrow will serve as alternates during home games, while Mario Ferraro and Alexander Wennberg will take on this role when the Sharks are on the road.

Significance of Leadership Group

Warsofsky emphasized the significance of this leadership group, noting that each player brings valuable qualities and character traits representative of the Sharks’ identity.

“These individuals embody what it means to be a Shark, and the identity we want to have as a team,”

he remarked. He expressed enthusiasm for these players taking on leadership roles and setting a positive example for the rest of the team.

Departure from Tradition

This decision marks a departure from tradition, as it is the first time since the 2014-15 season that the Sharks will not have a designated captain. After Joe Pavelski held the captaincy starting in the 2015-16 season, Logan Couture took the helm in 2019-20. Despite not playing last season due to a persistent groin and pelvic injury, Couture was still recognized with the captaincy until he announced in April that he would step away from playing.

With this new strategy, San Jose is aiming to rebuild and reinforce its team dynamics as they approach a competitive season.
