Samford Bulldogs Triumph in Southern Conference Tournament

In a thrilling showdown for the Southern Conference Tournament title, the sixth-seeded Samford Bulldogs triumphed over the top-seeded Chattanooga Mocs with a final score of 72-67. This victory allows Samford to make its return to the NCAA Tournament, marking their third appearance, previously having participated in 2011 and 2012.

Standout Performances

The standout performance came from Kaylee Yarbrough, who netted 25 points, while teammate Francie Morris contributed 22 points, showcasing their exceptional capability from beyond the arc. Yarbrough, who has transitioned from a part-time starter in her freshman year to an impactful player, excelled by hitting 5 of 7 three-point shots. Morris also added to the Bulldogs’ shooting prowess, making 3 of her 6 attempts. Overall, Samford made an impressive 10 of their 17 three-point attempts during the game, capitalizing on their average of 26 attempts per game and 8.4 successful shots.

Game Highlights

The game saw Samford heading into the fourth quarter with a comfortable 54-43 lead. However, Chattanooga’s Izzy McPherson sparked a comeback with three rapid three-pointers, narrowing the gap to 60-58 with just over five minutes remaining. Despite struggling offensively afterward, Chattanooga managed to keep the pressure on, with Caia Elisaldez shooting two free throws to close within three points at 70-67 with only 29 seconds on the clock.

In a last-ditch effort to tie the game, Kalifa Ford attempted a three-pointer but missed, allowing Samford to secure the rebound. Briana Rivera then sealed the deal with two free throws, finalizing the score.

Chattanooga’s Efforts

Elisaldez and McPherson led Chattanooga’s efforts with 20 and 17 points respectively, while Sierra Godbolt added 12 for Samford. The Mocs have now competed in the SoCon title game for the 22nd time and have made 17 appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
