In a decisive matchup on Wednesday evening, the 25th-ranked Saint Louis Billikens triumphed over Loyola Chicago, securing a 79-65 victory that earned them the top seed for the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament. The win marked a historic moment for the Billikens, as they concluded their season with an impressive 27-3 record and a perfect 15-2 in conference play, making it the first time in 18 years that they finished undefeated at Chaifetz Arena. With this victory, they also equaled the school’s record with their 22nd straight home win, 19 of which occurred this season alone.

Amari McCottry was a standout performer, contributing 18 points, while Dion Brown added 15 points to the scoreboard. For Loyola Chicago, Xavier Amos emerged as a key player, achieving a season-high of 25 points, supported by Kayde Dotson who netted 19 points. Amos showcased an impressive first half where he scored 18 points without a miss, sinking four three-pointers over a rapid three-minute span that narrowed an early 12-point deficit.

Game Highlights

Despite entering the game with a struggling 31% shooting rate from beyond the arc, the Ramblers managed to keep the contest competitive, outscoring Saint Louis by nine from three-point range. However, the Billikens compensated with a robust overall shooting percentage of 60%, with a critical stretch of eight consecutive points solidifying their lead before finishing strong.

Paul Otieno’s layup at the 4:49 mark extended their lead to 16 points, effectively sealing the game. In a touching moment, Robbie Avila, celebrating his final home game, scored 12 points and secured six rebounds as the crowd erupted in cheers calling for him in the last minute of play.

Looking Ahead

The Billikens, who had to rebound from double-digit deficits in previous games, quickly took control early on with back-to-back three-pointers from McCottry and Brady Dunlap, which helped build a quick 18-6 lead. Despite the late charge from Loyola, Saint Louis entered halftime with a 40-32 advantage.

Looking ahead, Loyola Chicago will face George Washington in their next game on Saturday, while Saint Louis prepares to visit George Mason the same day.
