Ryan Johnson Appointed General Manager of Vancouver Canucks
In a significant development for the Vancouver Canucks, Ryan Johnson has been appointed as the 13th General Manager in the team’s history. After an extensive selection process that spanned a month and included interviews with more than 15 candidates, the franchise opted for Johnson, who has previously served as the Canucks’ Assistant General Manager and also held the General Manager position for the Abbotsford Canucks. This marks Johnson’s inaugural role as a General Manager at the NHL level.
Career Progression
Having been a part of the Canucks organization since 2013, Johnson’s career trajectory has seen him evolve from a development coach to various management positions. Notably, he became the Assistant Director of Player Development in the 2015-16 season. Johnson climbed the ranks to serve as the Director of Player Development before being appointed as the Assistant General Manager of the then Utica Comets in the 2017-18 season, continuing in that role even after the team relocated to Abbotsford.
During the 2022-23 season, Johnson transitioned to becoming a special assistant to the General Manager, who at that time was Patrik Allvin. His expertise and experience have now culminated in his promotion to General Manager of the Canucks.
Collaboration with Alumni
In this new role, Johnson will collaborate with well-known alumni Daniel and Henrik Sedin, who were named co-presidents of Hockey Operations after having spent their entire playing careers with the team.
Search for a New General Manager
Under the leadership of Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford, the search for a new General Manager included several notable candidates, such as Evan Gold (Boston Bruins AGM), Pierre Dorion (former Ottawa Senators GM), and Brett Peterson (Florida Panthers AGM). With Johnson officially on board, the Canucks are now focusing on the upcoming 2026 NHL Draft set for June 26-27, with the team holding two critical first-round picks, including the third-overall selection.
