Ryan Garcia vs. Conor Benn: Title Fight Announcement
Ryan Garcia has officially set the date for his much-anticipated world title fight against British boxer Conor Benn, announcing it will occur in Las Vegas on September 12. During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Garcia expressed that this matchup means a lot to him personally, mentioning Benn as a notable adversary from across the Atlantic.
Garcia’s Confidence and Personal Stakes
Garcia, who gained the WBC welterweight championship by besting Mario Barrios earlier this year, shared his thoughts about the upcoming fight.
“We are fighting September 12 in Vegas. It’s personal because he’s been talking a lot—talking some crazy things,”
he stated. He recounted a particular incident where Benn confronted him at an award ceremony two years ago, asserting that such past exchanges contribute to the intensity of their upcoming battle.
Predicting a decisive victory, Garcia confidently claimed,
“I’m really going to put a whooping on this man, and we will send him back to the UK sipping on some tea.”
Benn’s Journey and Commitment
In stark contrast, Conor Benn, 29 years old, has forged ahead after the only loss in his professional career to Chris Eubank Jr. He successfully avenged that defeat in a rematch and triumphed over former champion Regis Prograis in April, solidifying his status as the mandatory challenger for Garcia’s title.
Benn has openly expressed his commitment to the fight against Garcia. In previous comments to Sky Sports, he reiterated the significance of this matchup, declaring,
“Of course, it is the priority to get that Garcia fight done, but I am not short of options. There are many fighters calling me out. By God’s grace, we will finalize the Garcia fight for the title; I’ve earned my spot as the number one contender.”
Benn secured his position through a recent contract extension with Zuffa Boxing after parting ways with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing earlier in the year, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling showdown.
