Russell Westbrook Undergoes Hand Surgery, Eyes Future Options with the Nuggets

Westbrook’s Postseason Performance

During this postseason, Russell Westbrook provided the Denver Nuggets with an average of 11.7 points in roughly 24 minutes of play per game. His contributions proved pivotal in securing several victories. However, his shooting performance was not optimal, registering a 39.1% shooting percentage, occasionally leading to disappointing outings.

Health Concerns

It has since been revealed that a fractured hand may have played a role in his struggles. Westbrook shared on his blog, “World of Westbrook,” that he recently underwent surgery to address two fractures in his right hand. The Nuggets organization also confirmed the procedure.

“I’m having surgery to repair two breaks in my right hand that I sustained during the season. I am thankful for all the support throughout the year and am eager to return at full strength soon. The journey to recovery is already underway,”

he wrote.

Future Options

As Westbrook contemplates his next move, he has a player option valued at $3.5 million for the upcoming season. At 36 years old, following his surgery, the prospect of entering free agency looms. Despite the potential of exploring other offers, it appears that the financial incentives for him elsewhere may not be substantial, nor might there be a more advantageous situation than what he has in Denver.

Synergy with Jokic

Westbrook has thrived in his role alongside star center Nikola Jokic, whose exceptional passing ability has significantly enhanced Westbrook’s game—allowing him to capitalize on cuts to the basket and quick transitions. For the regular season, Westbrook averaged 13.3 points, alongside 6.1 assists and 4.9 rebounds while spending nearly 28 minutes on the court in each of the 75 games he participated in.

With the Nuggets eager to bolster their roster around Jokic, the organization would likely welcome Westbrook’s return. Nevertheless, it is expected that he and his agent will explore other potential playoff teams that could offer him more lucrative contracts or increased playing time.
