Ruben Amorim Prepares to Manage Manchester United Against Burnley Amid Scrutiny

Ruben Amorim’s Management of Manchester United

Ruben Amorim is expected to manage Manchester United during their upcoming Premier League clash with Burnley on Saturday, according to ESPN’s sources. Despite a disheartening defeat to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, club executives remain calm and are not rushing to make rash decisions regarding his position.

Recent Performance and Future Considerations

The recent loss, which eliminated United from the competition, has intensified scrutiny on Amorim, whose 2027 contract keeps him with the club for the foreseeable future. Following the match, the 40-year-old expressed that changes are necessary and indicated he might evaluate his role within the club during the upcoming international break.

Amorim’s future will likely be a prominent topic during his scheduled press conference on Friday at Carrington, especially in light of his candid reflections after the Grimsby match. Manchester United has had a rocky start in the Premier League, managing only one point across their first two games against Arsenal and Fulham, placing them in a precarious 16th position in the table.

Struggles Under Amorim’s Leadership

Since Amorim took over last November, Manchester United has struggled significantly, achieving merely seven wins out of 29 league matches. Additionally, they missed the chance to compete in European tournaments after losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final last May. The club’s performance last season earned them a disappointing 15th place—an embarrassing low not seen since their relegation in 1974.

Management Support and Transfer Window Activity

While the ownership group, including co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and CEO Omar Berrada, have not escalated pressure on Amorim, there is a recognized threat that another poor result might lead him to reassess his fit for the role. Earlier this year, during a particularly tough stretch, Amorim received reassurance from Ratcliffe, Berrada, and director of football Jason Wilcox regarding his position.

Amorim had expressed a desire to take charge this summer rather than stepping in mid-season after Erik ten Hag’s departure. Amid this challenging backdrop, United is also focused on offloading several senior players in the final days of the transfer window, including Alejandro Garnacho, Tyrell Malacia, Jadon Sancho, and Antony. Reports suggest that United is optimistic about securing deals for Garnacho and Antony with Chelsea and Real Betis respectively, though Malacia’s loan could be complicated. Sancho’s situation remains uncertain, and striker Rasmus Højlund, who has been absent since a preseason match against Everton, is also a candidate for a potential move.
