Amorim’s Confidence Amidst Challenges
In the wake of a disappointing start to the Premier League season, Ruben Amorim has expressed confidence in the backing he continues to receive from Manchester United’s management. The Portuguese coach recently held discussions with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of the club, along with CEO Omar Berrada and football director Jason Wilcox, at the Carrington training ground on Thursday.
Recent Performance and Upcoming Matches
This meeting followed a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City, marking one of the worst beginnings to a league campaign for United since the 1992-93 season. Ahead of a critical match against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday, Amorim reassured fans that the club’s hierarchy remains supportive of his efforts.
When asked about his conversation with Ratcliffe, Amorim quipped, “He was offering me a new contract!” but added that the talks were routine and focused on the long-term vision for the club.
“It’s my first season here, and that was emphasized. I discussed various aspects with him, Omar, and Jason, particularly the team’s performance data.”
Player Updates and Team Expectations
Amorim received a boost with the news that both Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha are fit to return for the upcoming clash. They had been absent during the defeat against City but are now available as the team seeks its first league win against Chelsea, who haven’t triumphed at Old Trafford in over a decade.
With growing pressure surrounding his position, Amorim is keenly aware of the demands that come with coaching Manchester United.
“This is football, and perhaps this club holds the heaviest expectations in the world,” he stated.
Despite previous criticisms of the team’s playstyle, he believes progress is being made, particularly in overall performance, but acknowledges a need for improvement in execution during key moments.
“We need to be more aggressive and clinical in the boxes. Overall, I think we are in a better place compared to last year, but losses against Arsenal and City have certainly made things challenging at the start of the season,” he concluded.
