USWNT Prepares for Friendlies Against Italy
As the United States Women’s National Team gears up for two friendly matches against Italy, midfielder Rose Lavelle stresses the importance of unity on the field. Reflecting on a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Portugal earlier in October, Lavelle emphasizes the need for a cohesive team effort.
“After that first Portugal match, it became clear that we needed to reconnect and function collectively as a unit,” she explained.
The USWNT will face Italy in Orlando on November 28, followed by another match in Fort Lauderdale on December 1. Lavelle shared her insights on the lessons learned:
“We left that game feeling disappointed. We know we must elevate our performance and not repeat that experience. This gives us a chance to learn and adapt quickly before facing the same opponent just two days later.”
The team managed to bounce back from the loss by winning their rematch against Portugal 3-1 just three days later. Despite this victory, head coach Emma Hayes remains vigilant, reminding players of the necessary preparation and focus required for the upcoming games.
“Our players keep an eye on major tournaments. They’re aware of Italy’s strengths and the high caliber of their athletes, especially since some of our players compete against them in the Champions League. It’s crucial that we don’t approach this match like we did in the first game of our last camp. We must elevate our level of play to match their caliber.”
In addition, Hayes confirmed that all players from Gotham FC will be fit for selection after their recent NWSL championship victory over the Washington Spirit on November 22.
“It was an exhilarating match with a lot of energy, and I’ve managed their recovery accordingly. They will be ready for Friday, and every player is eager to don the national colors, making my selection decisions more challenging than usual,” Hayes remarked.
With their sights set on improvement, the USWNT looks to demonstrate their growth against Italy in the upcoming friendlies, ensuring they make a statement after the lessons learned from their previous matches.
