Rory McIlroy Struggles with Double Bogey in Opening Round; Eight Shots Behind Francesco Molinari

Dubai Desert Classic Opening Round

In an unexpected turn during the opening round of the Dubai Desert Classic, Rory McIlroy recorded a 1-over 73, placing him significantly behind the leader. Currently, he finds himself eight strokes adrift of Francesco Molinari, who dazzled the field with a 7-under 65.

McIlroy’s Disappointing Finish

The incident that marred McIlroy’s round occurred on the 18th hole, which he was playing as his ninth; after a misplayed chip, his ball rolled back into the water, leading to a penalty and a double-bogey seven. This marked a disappointing conclusion to his round.

Fleetwood and Hatton’s Performance

In the same group as McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood faced a challenging round as well, finishing on a score of 73 after dropping shots on the 14th and 16th holes, in addition to the 18th. The skilled Ryder Cup duo was outperformed by their companion, Tyrrell Hatton, who managed to shoot a 2-under 70 while defending his title at Emirates Golf Club. Another rider from the same squad, Shane Lowry, also made a positive showing, ending the day at 2-under.

Molinari’s Impressive Performance

Molinari’s impressive performance was highlighted by eight birdies, including an explosive start with four birdies in his opening five holes starting on the back nine. He finished strong with three consecutive birdies on his closing stretch through the ninth hole. Right behind him in second place is Mikael Lindberg, who compiled a 5-under 67. Meanwhile, Joel Girrbach stands alone at 4-under in third place. A notable presence in the pack on 3-under is Wenyi Ding, a 21-year-old who previously played for Arizona State University, adding further excitement to the tournament as it progresses.

Looking Ahead

As the competition continues, all eyes will be on whether McIlroy can bounce back in the subsequent rounds and challenge the formidable lead set by Molinari.
