Ronaldo Champions Neymar’s Role in Brazil’s 2026 World Cup Aspirations

Ronaldo’s Optimism for Neymar and the 2026 World Cup

Brazilian football icon Ronaldo has voiced his optimism regarding Neymar’s potential impact on the upcoming 2026 World Cup. Currently 33 years old, Neymar has not donned the Brazil jersey since October 2023 due to a series of injuries. National team manager Carlo Ancelotti has emphasized the necessity of Neymar maintaining peak physical fitness to secure his place in the squad.

Ronaldo expressed his belief in Neymar’s significant role, stating, “Brazil has the talent to achieve great things with the squad available. I am confident that Neymar will be an integral player in the World Cup. Everyone desires for him to be at his best, and Ancelotti shares this sentiment, as does Neymar himself; I sense a strong motivation in him to participate and contribute to the team’s success.”

Neymar’s Journey and Challenges

As Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, Neymar is eager to make his fourth World Cup appearance next year. After terminating his contract with Al Hilal, he returned to Santos, the club where he began his career, in January. His stint in Saudi Arabia was marred by an ACL injury sustained while on international duty, which has hindered his playing time. Further complications, including a thigh injury in April and a recent muscular issue, have kept him from Ancelotti’s initial roster selections.

Santos’ Struggles and Ronaldo’s Defense of Neymar

Santos is currently facing tough challenges in Brazil’s top league, finding themselves in a precarious position in 16th place following a 1-1 draw against Atletico Mineiro. This performance places them just above the relegation zone, inciting frustrations among supporters. Ronaldo defended Neymar against harsh criticism, remarking,

“His recovery from injury is a normal process—rehabilitation and finding his match rhythm take time. While the expectations for Neymar are undeniably high, I find the backlash to be excessive. Nonetheless, Neymar understands the work required to be fully fit for the World Cup.”

Brazil’s World Cup Qualification and Future Prospects

Despite Brazil’s recent struggles, they managed to qualify for the World Cup, albeit with a disappointing fifth-place finish in the South American standings—28 points marking their worst qualifying campaign to date. The team has not captured the world title since 2002, coming closest in 2014 with a fourth-place finish while hosting.

Ronaldo’s Faith in Coach Ancelotti

Ronaldo, a two-time World Cup champion, also showed faith in coach Ancelotti, describing him as a remarkable leader who fosters a positive environment.

“Ancelotti is incredibly tactical and a proven winner on the footballing stage. He possesses all the elements needed to guide the national team towards success.”

In the lead-up to the tournament, both Neymar and the Brazil team face critical tests as they prepare for a challenging World Cup journey ahead.
