Rodri’s Reflections on Injury and Recognition
Rodri, the midfielder for both Spain and Manchester City, expressed that despite receiving the prestigious Ballon d’Or award last year, it does not diminish the frustration of recovering from a significant injury. The 29-year-old athlete suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, which kept him off the field for the majority of the previous season. Although he was honored with the coveted football award shortly after his injury, he emphasized that the accolade could not replace the lost playing time.
Press Conference Insights
In a recent press conference ahead of Spain’s World Cup qualifier against Turkey, Rodri stated,
“The injury is much more significant than the Ballon d’Or. It was a moment of relief during a difficult period for me.”
He acknowledged the award as a welcome recognition but insisted that it holds little value at a time when he is focused on rediscovering his peak performance.
“I just want to return to my former level and enjoy football again,”
he added, noting that his current priority is to regain his fitness. So far this season, he has participated in only two matches, playing a full game in one of them.
Competition and Team Dynamics
Rodri, who played as a substitute in Spain’s recent 3-0 victory over Bulgaria, also shared his awareness of rising competition for the national team spot from Arsenal’s new signing, Martín Zubimendi. He not only welcomes this competition but views it as a positive development, stating,
“He’s a fantastic player with the mindset and discipline to excel at a top level. I recently told him it’s his time to take charge of the team.”
Coach’s Confidence
The national team’s head coach, Luis de la Fuente, expressed confidence in Rodri’s readiness to play, wishing a speedy recovery to former coach Luis Enrique, who recently underwent surgery for a collarbone fracture. De la Fuente noted,
“Rodri is in perfect condition and could start the match depending on how training goes. The key takeaway is his presence, which brings us optimism.”
