New Coaching Appointment for the New York Islanders
In a significant move for the coaching staff, the New York Islanders have elevated Rocky Thompson, who previously led the Bridgeport Islanders, to join Pete DeBoer’s team. This announcement was made on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
Thompson’s Successful Track Record
Thompson recently wrapped up a successful debut season with the Bridgeport Islanders, guiding the team from the bottom of the AHL, where they finished last in the 2024-25 season, to a playoff spot—a feat they hadn’t accomplished since the 2021-22 season.
At 48 years old, Thompson brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Before his stint in Bridgeport, he played 25 games in the NHL, drafted in the third round, primarily representing the Calgary Flames and the Florida Panthers. His coaching experience at the NHL level spans six years, which includes one season as an assistant with the Edmonton Oilers in 2014-2015 and dual terms with the San Jose Sharks from 2020 to 2022 followed by three years with the Philadelphia Flyers (2022-2025) under the guidance of John Tortorella.
Connections and Future Prospects
While Thompson hasn’t directly worked alongside Pete DeBoer, there is a connection; Bob Boughner, currently an assistant coach with the Islanders, previously had Thompson as his assistant during their time together in San Jose. This promotion is seen as a recognition of Thompson’s ability to reshape the culture in Bridgeport while revitalizing the potential of the team’s prospects.
Reports suggest that Bob Boughner and Ray Bennett will continue their roles alongside Thompson, indicating that the Islanders coaching structure is taking shape for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
