Reversal of Boxing Ring Size Decision
The decision to reduce the dimensions of the boxing ring at the highly anticipated ‘Ring III’ event has been reversed following significant pushback from several fighters. Initially, Turki Alalshikh had proposed utilizing a smaller 20 x 18 ring, with even suggestions for an 18 x 18 configuration, aiming to enhance engagement and prevent the type of defensive boxing seen in past events. This recommendation was made in response to the lackluster crowd reactions during the previous Ring II in Times Square, where excessive evasive tactics led to what Alalshikh derogatorily termed ‘Tom & Jerry’ fights.
Standard Ring Size for Upcoming Event
This Saturday, fighters will compete in a standard ring size of 24 x 20 feet at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, an arena primarily known for tennis rather than boxing. Veteran boxing journalist Keith Idec confirmed the change, noting that Golden Boy Promotions, in charge of the event, initially supported the smaller dimensions but subsequently withdrew the plan after numerous boxers expressed their objections—including Edgar Berlanga, set to face Hamzah Sheeraz, who openly questioned the ring size adjustment.
Frustrations and Future Aspirations
Alalshikh, who leads Riyadh Season, took to social media to voice his frustrations about the nature of recent matches, stating,
“We cannot endorse bouts that display such reluctance to engage. We want authentic heart and pride from those who step into the ring.”
He expressed a desire to prevent similar experiences in future fights, emphasizing his support for high-energy performances.
Event Details and Anticipated Matchups
Despite spectacular performances by the likes of Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, and Teofimo Lopez not moving the audience as hoped, the adjustments for Ring III signify an attempt to cater to the fighters’ preferences as well as improve the overall fight atmosphere. Shakur Stevenson, who is set to headline the event against William Zepeda, welcomed the decision, as it benefits fighters who depend heavily on their agility and strategy. Other anticipated matchups include:
- Berlanga vs. Sheeraz
- Alberto Puello vs. Subriel Matias for the WBC super lightweight title
- David Morrell Jr vs. Imam Khataev
DAZN will provide coverage beginning at 5 p.m. ET / 10 p.m. BST, with ticket prices set at $59.99 in the U.S. and £24.99 in the U.K.
