Rick Bowness Set to Coach Columbus Blue Jackets for Another Season

Columbus Blue Jackets Confirm Rick Bowness as Head Coach

The Columbus Blue Jackets have confirmed the return of Rick Bowness as their head coach for the upcoming season, following his successful stint that began in January. Bowness took the reins from Dean Evason on January 12 and steered the team to a commendable 21-11-5 record.

In a statement, Don Waddell, the team’s President of Hockey Operations and General Manager, praised Bowness for his exceptional leadership, emphasizing the strong rapport he has built with the players. Waddell expressed confidence that Bowness is the right choice to guide the team as they aim to improve and strive for a Stanley Cup.

Turning the Team’s Fortunes Around

When Bowness joined, the Blue Jackets were struggling at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. He quickly turned the team’s fortunes around, leading them to an impressive 18-2-4 record in his first 24 games and putting them in playoff contention after a remarkable streak of 12 consecutive games earning points.

However, as the season progressed, the team faltered, ultimately finishing with a disappointing 3-9-1 record that prevented them from qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the sixth consecutive year.

After a tough defeat against the Washington Capitals to end the season, Bowness expressed his frustration over the team’s lack of commitment, claiming that losing didn’t seem to affect the players sufficiently. He made it clear that if he continued with the team, a cultural transformation was necessary, stating his determination to implement changes based on his vast experience in the league.

Coaching Experience and Future Prospects

At 71, Bowness is poised to be the oldest coach in the NHL when the next season commences. His coaching resume includes a record of 331 wins against 419 losses, with four ties and 42 overtime losses over several franchises including the Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, and Winnipeg Jets.

This season, the Blue Jackets obtained a total of 92 points, marking the fifth-highest total in the franchise’s history, but it was disappointing that this achievement did not culminate in a playoff spot for them. Key players include Zach Werenski, who led the team with 81 points and is a strong contender for the Norris Trophy as the top defenseman.

Additionally, the team has several unrestricted free agents, including center Charlie Coyle and left wing Mason Marchment, while Adam Fantilli, their third overall pick in the 2023 draft, is anticipated to secure a significant contract extension as a restricted free agent.
