Rick Bowness Criticizes Blue Jackets’ Attitude After Missing Playoffs

Columbus Blue Jackets Performance Under Rick Bowness

The Columbus Blue Jackets experienced a surge in performance following the installation of Rick Bowness as head coach, yet a late-season downturn ultimately denied them a spot in the playoffs. After a disappointing 2-1 defeat to the Washington Capitals on April 14, Bowness unleashed his frustrations, criticizing his players for their lack of effort.

“Just look at the stats: three hits and 23 turnovers. It’s unacceptable,” Bowness exclaimed. “I’m not sure about my future, but if I stay, we need to alter this culture. These players don’t seem to care; losing doesn’t seem to affect them enough. How do you even compete like that? This is the reason we missed the playoffs,” he added.

Under Bowness, who replaced Dean Evason on January 12, the team recorded a 21-11-5 record, highlighted by a remarkable 10-1 stretch before the Olympic break; however, they faltered at the end of the season, managing only a 2-8-1 record in their final games.

Reflections and Future Plans

Reflecting on the situation, Bowness remarked,

“We anticipated a challenging period post-Olympics, but when adversity hit, the response was lacking. Success was welcome, but when times got tough, we shied away from the fight.”

With his interim coaching contract set to conclude, he intends to discuss his future with general manager Don Waddell after the season, emphasizing the need for a cultural shift within the team.

End of Season Remarks

After their season-ending loss, Bowness expressed relief that there would be no immediate practice for the team. The defeat marked their sixth consecutive loss at home, leading to their sixth straight absence from playoff contention. In his powerful closing remarks, he stated,

“It’s outrageous, and if they’re not ashamed of this performance, they don’t belong here.”
