Proposal for LaLiga Fixture in Miami
On Monday, the board of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is set to deliberate on advancing the proposal to host a LaLiga fixture between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami, as confirmed by a spokesperson during an interview with ESPN. The ambition to stage a competitive match in the United States has been a long-held goal for LaLiga, with President Javier Tebas expressing hopes of achieving this by the 2025-26 season. The league previously attempted to organize a matchup between Girona and Barcelona in Miami back in 2018, but this initiative was halted due to objections from both FIFA and the RFEF.
FIFA Authorization Process
According to the spokesperson, a key agenda item for the RFEF’s board meeting will involve initiating the process of obtaining FIFA’s prior authorization to hold this prominent match on December 20, 2025, at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. This aligns with FIFA regulations governing international fixtures and is also in compliance with rules established by both the RFEF and the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).
In a significant shift, FIFA lifted its objection to competitive LaLiga contests being played in the US after facing a lawsuit from Relevant Sports Group—a business partner of LaLiga in the United States. This lawsuit was resolved in April, paving the way for future international matches. The requirement for approval involves multiple stakeholders, including UEFA, Concacaf, and the USSF, in addition to the RFEF.
Leadership Changes and Future Prospects
The upcoming discussion represents a pivotal moment for the RFEF, which previously resisted such plans, particularly under the leadership of former president Luis Rubiales, who resigned in 2023 following controversy surrounding his conduct post-Women’s World Cup final. His successor, Rafael Louzan, seems to favor a more cooperative relationship with LaLiga and its executive.
