Florida Panthers’ Playoff Memories
In recent years, the Florida Panthers have delivered some unforgettable moments during the NHL playoffs, particularly in the months of April, May, and June. Although they are sitting out the postseason this year, fans can anticipate their return to competitive form for the Stanley Cup in the near future. The anticipation is bittersweet, especially considering the team’s potential when at full strength. To ease the disappointment of not being in the playoffs, THN Florida is reflecting on special playoff memories from times gone by.
Pivotal Game: April 26, 2023
Today, we take a look back at a pivotal game that took place on April 26, 2023. In a do-or-die situation, the Panthers found themselves facing off against the formidable Boston Bruins in Game 5 of their first-round series. With the Panthers entering as the eighth seed and the Bruins boasting a record-breaking regular season, Florida was on the verge of elimination, trailing the series 3-1.
Competing at the TD Garden in Boston, the Panthers rose to the occasion. After suffering two tough losses at home, they were determined. Anthony Duclair opened the scoring in the first period, placing Florida ahead 1-0. The momentum continued as Sam Bennett netted another goal, securing a 2-1 lead heading into the second intermission despite a previous equalizer from Brad Marchand.
The tension grew in the third period when a power play goal from Sam Reinhart briefly put the Panthers ahead, but Taylor Hall quickly answered, leveling the score at three-all. In a nail-biting moment just before regulation ended, Marchand had a breakaway chance that could’ve sealed the series for the Bruins, but Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky pulled off a stunning kick save to keep Florida’s postseason hopes alive.
Overtime arrived, and it was not long before the game found its resolution. Linus Ullmark, the Bruins’ goaltender, mishandled the puck, which found its way to Matthew Tkachuk. With a deft backhand, Tkachuk hit the net, clinching the game for the Panthers and ensuring the series would continue in Florida.
This victory ignited what would become a historic playoff run for the Panthers, who won 10 of their next 11 games, ultimately advancing through the Eastern Conference to reach the Stanley Cup Final. The postseason journey was just the beginning, leading the team to back-to-back championships in 2024 and 2025. With many key players remaining under contract and a rising salary cap enabling potential new acquisitions, the future looks bright for the Cats and fans may celebrate even more victories at the Amerant Bank Arena in the times to come.
