Reilly Smith Returns to Stanley Cup Finals with Vegas Golden Knights

Reilly Smith’s Journey to the Stanley Cup Finals

Reilly Smith, a former member of the Florida Panthers, is gearing up for another appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals, this time with the Vegas Golden Knights. Smith’s time with the Panthers, which spanned two seasons, was marked by impressive performance; he recorded 25 goals and 50 points in his debut year (2015-16) and followed up with 15 goals and 37 points the next season.

The Expansion Draft and Golden Knights Success

In the historic 2017 expansion draft, the Golden Knights claimed Jonathan Marchessault from the Panthers, but they also required Smith as part of the transaction, which helped forge a powerful trio alongside William Karlsson. The trio’s chemistry led the Golden Knights to a Stanley Cup victory over the Panthers in 2023.

However, after that win, Smith was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins and subsequently to the New York Rangers. In a twist of fate, he returned to the Golden Knights by the trade deadline in 2025.

Current Performance and Team Dynamics

Now at 35, Smith’s current performance doesn’t mirror his past peaks, and he has faced challenges securing his position in the lineup, participating in only six games during the 2025-26 postseason, all against the Utah Mammoth, where he managed to contribute a couple of assists. Despite his limited playtime, Smith remains an invaluable presence in the locker room, providing leadership to younger teammates.

Looking Ahead: The Finals and Championship Aspirations

As the Golden Knights head into the finals after defeating the Presidents’ Trophy-holding Colorado Avalanche, they carry significant momentum and overall good health. While teams like the Carolina Hurricanes and Montreal Canadiens pose potential threats, the Golden Knights are favored to claim the championship. Should they secure the title, it would mark a second Stanley Cup win for Smith, enhancing his legacy within the league.
