Reflecting on Legends: Toffoli Honors Retiring Stars Kopitar and Quick

The Changing Landscape of the NHL

The landscape of the NHL is ever-changing, as Tyler Toffoli recently pointed out, reflecting on the imminent retirements of two legends from his early career, Anze Kopitar and Jonathan Quick. Having embarked on his professional journey in Southern California, Toffoli spent a significant eight seasons with Kopitar and Quick as part of the Los Angeles Kings. With the Kings now on the brink of elimination from the Stanley Cup Playoffs at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche, Kopitar’s retirement could be just around the corner.

Admiration for Anze Kopitar

Toffoli took a moment to express his admiration for Kopitar, the team’s current captain.

“He’s the best,”

Toffoli remarked, emphasizing the profound influence Kopitar had on him as a newcomer in the league.

“He looked after me, and watching him receive such respect this year has been something truly special. He’s one of the finest teammates I’ve ever had.”

Jonathan Quick’s Journey

Meanwhile, Quick’s journey took him beyond the Kings after his tenure there, making stops with the Vegas Golden Knights and briefly with the Columbus Blue Jackets, before concluding his career with the New York Rangers. Toffoli humorously shared that he had an inkling about Quick’s retirement, noting,

“You never would have expected him to keep going and do what he was doing in New York. He is definitely one of the best teammates I’ve played alongside.”

He added,

“If I had to pick a goalie for a Game 7 situation, it would definitely be him.”

The Rivalry and Future Mentorship

For long-time fans of the San Jose Sharks, the fierce rivalry with the Kings during the 2010s is unforgettable, largely shaped by the talents of Kopitar and Quick. As Toffoli now dons the Sharks’ colors, he plans to leverage the experiences and lessons learned from his time with the Kings to mentor the next wave of Sharks players, ensuring the rivalry remains as thrilling and memorable as ever.
