I had ventured bold yet plausible guesses for each of the league’s 30 teams, and now it’s time to evaluate their accuracy. In this review, I will provide a grade for each prediction while considering their potential impact on the upcoming 2026-27 season. Inspired by David Schoenfield’s similar practice for Major League Baseball, every team will be assessed based on the initial forecasts made.
Team Performances and Predictions
Understanding the performance of various teams throughout this season offers insights into their trajectories moving forward. Notably, the Knicks secured an impressive third seed in the Eastern Conference, ultimately making it to the Finals, a feat not reached since 1999. Under the guidance of coach Mike Brown, their playoff journey culminated in an 11-game winning streak, granting them a robust position heading into next season, where they will likely be considered top contenders.
Jalen Johnson of the Atlanta Hawks emerged as a spectacular talent, averaging 22.5 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 7.9 assists, earning him a spot on the All-NBA third team. Although he faced challenges in the playoffs, his development indicates a strong future for the Hawks, especially after the trade of star player Trae Young.
For the Denver Nuggets, the forecast of Jamal Murray joining Nikola Jokic as an All-Star proved accurate, as Murray not only made the All-Star team but also gained All-NBA honors. However, the Nuggets are now reconsidering their roster after a disappointing playoff exit, aiming to gather more talent around Jokic for future campaigns.
The Toronto Raptors exceeded expectations by clinching a playoff spot with a winning record, continuing their trend of improvement. The focus for next season will be on enhancing their playoff performance, potentially aided by key roster additions.
Ryan Rollins outshined as the Bucks’ top guard, edging out Kevin Porter Jr., which gives Milwaukee a promising guard combination as they look towards upcoming seasons. Meanwhile, the Mavericks saw P.J. Washington secure a starting role, fitting in well alongside their future star, Cooper Flagg.
Underperforming Predictions
Looking at other predictions that didn’t fare as well, the anticipated struggles for Mike Conley with Minnesota were confirmed as he transitioned out of a starting position. Similarly, despite hopes for strong defensive outputs, the Cavaliers barely made it above average defensively, signaling notable issues in their structure.
On the other side of evaluations, predictions regarding the Portland Trail Blazers and the Oklahoma City Thunder didn’t meet expectations. While the Thunder started strong, injuries halted their pursuit of historical win totals, and the Blazers couldn’t establish a strong reputation in their new configurations.
