Red Wings Make Bold Moves at Trade Deadline: Yzerman Discusses Perron’s Return and Other Potential Acquisitions

Detroit Red Wings Make Significant Moves at NHL Trade Deadline

The Detroit Red Wings, currently positioned third in the Atlantic Division, made significant moves at the NHL Trade Deadline on Friday, marking a pivotal moment in their quest for playoff contention. This represents the team’s first active shopping spree at the trade deadline in over ten years.

Key Trades to Enhance the Roster

On the verge of bolstering their roster, the Red Wings completed a notable trade to enhance their defensive lineup by acquiring seasoned defenseman Justin Faulk from the St. Louis Blues. In exchange, Detroit relinquished prospect Dmitri Buchelnikov, veteran defenseman Justin Holl, a first-round draft pick, and a third-round selection from the San Jose Sharks for the upcoming 2026 NHL Entry Draft. Earlier in the day, the Red Wings had obtained that Sharks pick from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Elmer Soderblom, effectively concluding the latter’s time in Detroit.

Strengthening the Forward Corps

In addition to their defensive upgrades, Detroit sought to strengthen their forward corps by bringing back David Perron from the Ottawa Senators. The acquisition came at the cost of a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2026 draft. Perron previously spent two seasons with the Red Wings from 2022 to 2024 and is anticipated to add much-needed leadership to the locker room, despite currently recovering from sports hernia surgery. General Manager Steve Yzerman stated Perron is expected to be back on the ice in approximately two weeks.

“We’re aware of his situation and expect him to return fully in about 14 days,” Yzerman noted.

“He offers a lot beyond his on-ice skills, and we believe he will play a crucial role in our pursuit of a playoff spot,” Yzerman added, reflecting on the impact Perron had during his previous stint in Detroit.

Exploring Other Trade Options

While there were speculations surrounding the team’s interest in other high-profile forwards such as Vincent Trocheck of the New York Rangers, Elias Pettersson from the Vancouver Canucks, and Robert Thomas of the St. Louis Blues, discussions did not lead to trades as the fit wasn’t right for the Red Wings. Yzerman clarified,

“We engaged every team with players meeting our needs and explored potential deals, but sometimes the match simply doesn’t exist.”

Looking Ahead

As the Red Wings look to solidify their roster before the playoff push, they aim to maximize their new trades while waiting for Perron’s recovery. Fans are eager to see if these strategic moves will lead to a return to postseason play for Detroit.
